“MALOWANE W JIDISZ” – wystawa/ PAINTED IN YIDDISH – exhibition (2007)

Nadawanie życia przedmiotom za pośrednictwem soczewki aparatu. Historia kultury zamknięta w upodmiotowieniu symbolów.

Items, apparently lifeless items. I watch them, I touch them, distinguish, brush off dust, bury myself into them, learn them anew, opening my heart still shyly, tremulously, as if with fear, to avoid disturbing something holy. I open up my heart and I feel how they slowly revive under my hand, inside my head, inside of me. I hear long unheard voices deep inside me, I see and feel. I begin to sense again, increasingly stronger, the worst of all disgraces of contemporary Europe, of the entire world. Also my own disgrace. Yitzhak Katzenelson’s „Song of the Murdered Jewish People” is again pulsating inside of me. I bow my head…

Items, apparently lifeless items… How can time be stopped, how memory of them can be saved, how can they be pulled out of oblivion?! Jacek Jędrzejczak is doing all that with his camera lens, tenderly stroking them with light, indeed painting their portraits, portraits so human. For some hand did kindle the Hanukkah light, the yad did point the Torah, in this menorah burning lights illuminated the faces of household members gathered by the Sabbath table, thousands of times… Light and darkness. No, light.

“I lift my eyes, I look at these pictures and feel that reveals to us the mystery of his forgotten world of Yiddish culture.”
